Thousands of American pilots learned to fly with the PT-17 Stearman. Often nicknamed the "kay-det" for the cadets who flew it, green pilots had to complete 70 hours of flying in this trainer before graduating to more advanced aircraft. This aircraft, 41-8169, is marked in USAAF training colors. It wears the incorrect tail number 217786.
