This soap opera-cum-oscar winner hopeful isn't really about World War II. It's about geisha in pre- and post-World War II Japan, obviously. According to several reviews, the latter part of the film deals with the American occupation. I don’t know if the film will deal with things like the bombings. Setting Geisha in Gion, a district of Kyoto, meant that they only had to deal with incidental raids, not the flattening of Tokyo, Yokohama, and other cities. I'm sure given the romantic appeal of this film, they won't really deal with the consequences of the war, but I haven’t read the book and I don’t plan on seeing this movie. There’s something about geisha running around worrying about doing each other in when the whole country was on the verge of suicide that I can’t stomach.
