In February 2006, I visited the former RAF station at Duxford, England. Duxford was an important control center during the Battle of Britain and a major staging area for the 8th Air Froce during the Air War over Europe from 1942-1945. Today Duxford’s 1930’s-style hangars hold an impressive collection of preserved aircraft, armored fighting vehicles and artillery from all over the world. If they were all working, Duxford might be considered a powerful, if obsolete, army in its own right.
A curious find was the naval collection, not large by any means, but striking in its historical impact. While I haven't covered the history of the KMS Tirpitz, she played a large role in the nightmares of the Royal Navy and Winston Churchill in particular.
