Churchill and the War Cabinet directed the defense of England in 1940 and 1941 from here. Photographs from inside didn't come out because I didn't want to use a flash.
This secret facility was built to protect the Command staff from air bombardment and to coordinate the defense of Britain from a protected location. Concrete guarded the entrance to the facility that was several feet think. Churchill had his telephone secure line to speak with Roosevelt, which even those who worked inside didn't know about, and thought it was a private loo (toilet) for Churchill alone. There were sleeping quarters for Churchill and the command staff, a telephone exchange, a Operations Room, a conference room and more.
