United States Marine Lieutenant General Keller E. Rockey (September 22, 1888 – June 6, 1970) commanded the Fifth Marine Division in the battle of Iwo Jima. On February 19, 1945, the Fifth Division assaulted the island of Iwo Jima with the V Amphibious Corps. Fighting across Motoyama Airfield #1, up Mount Suribachi, and then into the badlands of the Motoyama Plateau against an entrenched enemy, the last organized Japanese resistance was eliminated on March 25. two days later, the last Marines of the division sailed from Iwo Jima. The Fifth Division suffered 9,276 casualties; 2,416 killed in action or died of wounds, 6,860 wounded. | |
