| Close-up of Merlin engine. This Canadian-built Avro Lancaster Mark X came out of the factory and was test-flown on February 12, 1944. 45th Transport Group took the aircraft on December 18. 1944 and flew it to the United Kingdom on January 3, 1945, arriving on January 5. On January 28, it was flown to Aston Down and assigned to the 428 Squadron RAF on February 3, 1945. It received the code “NA-I“ in april 1945. NA-I was damaged in a cross-country flight on May 27, 1945. 428 Squadron returned to Canada with NA-I on June 4, 1945. After being retired in 1960, NA-I was sold to various air shows, including Age of Flight in Niagara Falls, Ontario in 1965. In 1984 the aircraft was shipped to Great Britain and registered as G-LANC. Using parts from an Avro Lincoln, she was restored to static display. The Imperial War Museum purchased G-LANC in 1986. After a six-year restoration, the aircraft went on display in 1994 as NA-I from 428 squadron. | |
