Battle of Kamenka Village

Image Information
Soviet soldiers of the 20th Army, West Front (equivalent to an Army Group) counterattack during the Battle for the village of Kamenka in October 1941. Kamenka was only twenty-five miles (40 kilometers) from Moscow. The Soviets and snow that melted and turned the ground to mud prevented their march on Moscow. Photographer Dmitri Baltermants (May 13, 1912 – June 11, 1990) was virtually unknown outside the Soviet Union, but his photos were some of the most poignant views of the Eastern Front. He worked for the Army and the newspaper Izvestia. His work was introduced to the West in an exhibition in New York City in 1985.
